Montfair Celebrates Fall with Its 3rd Annual Open House

By | News + Happenings | No Comments

The Open House idea was begun in 2015 to celebrate our 50th year of business. This year’s festivities will begin at noon and will include hiking the wooded 128-acre property, fishing on the lake, canoeing and mountain biking. We are hosting this popular fall event, free of charge, to celebrate the natural beauty of the area.

“We love this time of year and we love sharing Montfair with the local community,” states Leora Sheridan-Vincenti, one of four sibling co-owners of Montfair Resort Farm. “We welcome our community to come see why Montfair is a popular wedding and vacation venue and to tour our rustic cabins that are open year round for the public.” Cabin tours will begin at 1 PM and 3:30 PM.

Mouth Wide Open, a local food truck, will be onsite, local bluegrass music will start at 2 PM and Henley’s Orchard will be on site with their old time cider press. They will press fresh cider, give out samples as well as sell ½ gallon and gallon jugs of cider.

Joe Sheridan, co-owner of Montfair and founder of Rustic Arts, has a passion for rustic creations and will provide a rustic chair making demonstration focusing on “Rush Weaving” or the seating of his rustic chairs at 2 PM.

Artist Leora Sheridan-Vincenti will lead a nature sketchbook walk at 3 PM. Bring your own journal and drawing pencils for this workshop. Participants will take a walk through the Montfair forest and will be encouraged to find something in nature that resonates with them to draw.

Montfair is teaming up with the International Refugee Committee GenR’s to collect coats for our local refugee community. Please bring any gently used or new adult medium and large sized coats and winter gear to the Open House. Size medium and large are needed most.

The day will conclude with a s’mores bonfire from 4 PM to 6 PM by the lake and a Children’s Lantern Walk lead by Tinkergarten Charlottesville at 5:30 PM.

Spring Fly Fishing Retreat at Montfair

By | News + Happenings | No Comments

SpringFlyFling_logo

We are honored that Therapeutic Adventures has hosted their Women’s Spring Fly Fishing Retreat at Montfair for many years. This retreat is a chance for breast cancer survivors to come together in community and learn about fly fishing. Therapeutic Adventures reserves the Montfair cottages for the women’s shared accommodations and the Event Lodge for all communal activities. During the day the women split into groups, one group stays in the lodge and learns how to tie fishing lures while the other group goes to Sugar Hollow and fishes in the Moormans River. The groups switch activities after lunch. They gather in the lodge in the evenings for meals, yoga, massages, fellowship and music before heading back to a cottage to rest up for the next day. We always love sharing Montfair with this wonderful inspiring group!

Upcoming art workshops at Montfair

By | News + Happenings, Uncategorized | No Comments

There’s no doubt about it; Montfair steeps in creative energy. It helps that the founding family, the Sheridans, have had the arts in their blood for generations. Step into the office and you’ll see landscape paintings by co-owner Leora Vincenti and drawings and rustic chairs made by her brother and co-owner, Joe Sheridan.

When Leora and her husband Dave began to breathe new life into Montfair fifteen years ago, they envisioned the Events Lodge as a space not only for weddings, but also for community gatherings, workshops and retreats.

“We’re excited at Montfair to be at a point now where we can further develop our event programming and support of local artists,” says Leora.

After a successful workshop in February with Steven Martyn of the Sacred Gardener School, Montfair will continue to fill the lodge with eager learners during two upcoming art workshops:

This is the time to gather with family, loved ones and friends to experience the best of the season as we transition into Winter. Does a cozy cottage in the mountains of Virginia sound ideal? Winter brings a deep quiet and peace to our landscape.

Canoe, fish, star gaze, bike. Best yet find yourself rejuvenated after a meander on the gorgeous now windswept wooded hiking trails. Observe the magical winter light and breathe in the fresh mountain air.

We still see the Hawks in migration, Great Blue Heron, the Green Heron, and Belted Kingfishers on the Montfair lake on a daily basis! We have even caught sight of the breathtaking American Bald Eagles!

Our local is abundant with breweries, cider works, wineries, farm shops and  artisan studios that are bustling with activity for the holiday season.

You will want to have a hot cup of coffee or cocoa and a warm homemade sandwich at one of the local country stores for a quick lunch and maybe even hear a bit of local gossip.

Make sure you save time to explore the Sugar Hollow entrance to Shenandoah National Park, you will discover this gem tucked away  in the “holler” by following Sugar Hollow rd. that follows the  Mormon’s River. Enjoy hiking along the path of the gurgling river and see amazing icicles hanging from the cliffs. These are just a few of our favorite activities. Come on up to the mountains of Virginia. There is plenty of fresh air, natural beauty and room to roam on our family property. We hope to see you soon!

Thanks for a great Open House!

By | News + Happenings | No Comments

It’s been a late fall season this year, with 80 degree days in November and colors slow to peak. But there’s no denying those early sunsets and the blankets of leaves now covering the forest floor. At night winter edges in, leaving hints of itself as pockets of frost in the fields. We’re reminded that this time of year is best for quiet reflection, rest and cozy nights in a warm cabin. Where better to be than Montfair?

Last week we were excited to host our second-annual Montfair Open House. We celebrated the season with hot apple cider, chili and cornbread, chicken-noodle soup and caramel apples (made by Cakes by Rachel). Though the day was beautiful and warm, visitors roasted marshmallows at the bonfire.

One of our favorite parts of the day’s events was the old-time bluegrass tunes struck up by the Doyles River Cut-Ups out on the lodge deck. It was enough to inspire flat-footing and twirling and even some spontaneous harmonies. Can’t quite imagine it? Click on the video below for a taste of a joyful day at Montfair!
